1/ The test shall be conducted at 149 ± 2 °C (300 ± 4 °F) using cloud pour jars as specified
in ASTM-D97, Method 2500. The jars shall be filled with enough test sample to cover
the cleaned copper strip by at least 5 millimeters (mm). The strip shall be inserted to the
bottom of the jar and the jar covered lightly with a crucible cover, watch glass, or vented
cork. Interpret the corrosiveness of the sample according to how the appearance of the
copper strip compares with one of the copper corrosion standard strips of
ASTM-D130.
2/ Test cabinet and temperature shall be in accordance with FED-STD-791, Method 4001
using a 5 percent salt concentration.
3/ Duration of test shall be 10 minutes. Specimen size shall be 5 ± 0.1 grams and 500
milliliters shall be the volume of water.
4.5.3 Storage stability. The worked penetration after storage shall be determined on a
sample of grease which has been stored in a one pound (453.6 grams) oil-tight container for 6
months at a temperature of 38 ± 3 °C (100 ± 5 °F) subsequent to the original determination of the
penetration. The penetration after storage shall be determined in accordance with ASTM-D217.
4.5.4 Workmanship. The grease shall be examined to determine conformance to the
requirements specified in 3.4.
5. PACKAGING
5.1 Packaging. For acquisition purposes, the packaging requirements shall be as specified in
the contract or order (see 6.2). When actual packaging of materiel is to be performed by DoD
personnel, these personnel need to contact the responsible packaging activity to ascertain
requisite packaging requirements. Packaging requirements are maintained by the Inventory
Control Point's packaging activity within the Military Department or Defense Agency, or within
the Military Department's System Command. Packaging data retrieval is available from the
managing Military Department's or Defense Agency's automated packaging files, CD-ROM
products, or by contacting the responsible packaging activity.
